Valerio Sannicandro

Born in 1971, Valerio Sannicandro first studied in Italy (composition, viola and computer
music), where he took his viola degree in 1994 and began a career as free-lance violinist
especially as new music performer. In 1997 he attended the composition course of York
Höller in Cologne, and from 1998 he studies at the same time computer music with Dirk Reith
in Essen. Besides, he has attended courses and workshops with Vinko Globokar, Johannes
Kalitzke and Peter Eötvös.
Valerio Sannicandro's works have been performed by ensembles like MusikFabrik, Ensemble
Köln and Ensemble Modern. He has received several commissions, among them Memos
(1998) for the Phormix Ensemble (Darmstadt); in 1998 the work Scan for flute was performed
during the "Darmstädter Ferienkurse".

Apoteosi del Blu

Apoteosi del Blu (1998) has been written after a painting of Vassili Kandinski (Im Blau), giving
to all its elements a music parameter and to each geometrical figure a different musical character.
The evolution of the piece is divided into four parts without breaks: the immediate perception of
the picture as a whole, the elements are freely combined like an improvisation; each element is
seen in relationship with those that create an intersection; the figures are isolated and appear
separated from the others. The work ends with a polyphonic section where all the basic elements
appear at the same time.
