Philippe Boesmans was born in Tongres (Belgium) in 1936. After piano studies and
graduating from the Conservatory in Liège, he abandoned his planned piano career to
turn himself toward composition, which he learnt by himself. At first, he was influenced
by serialism but realised at an early stage the necessity to go further its constraints
and expulsions. But without repudiating this recent heritage, Philippe Boesmans rapidly
developed a personal musical language very largely based upon the communication between
the composer, the performer and the audience. Along his way through music, he has been
awarded many important prizes: the "Prix Italia" for Upon La-Mi (1971), the prize of the
Charles Cros Academy and the Koussevitzky prize for the Concerto pour violon and for
Conversions, among others.
