Vytautas Barkauskas

Vytautas Barkauskas is one of the best-known composers in Lithuania. He was born in Kaunas in 1931 and has been living in Vilnius since 1949. His first job was that of a mathematics teacher. Today he teaches composition at the Lithuanian Music Academy in Vilnius. In the 1970's, he was one of the foremost promoters of avant-garde music in Lithuania; he never subscribed to any concrete system of composition nor to any particular trend. He created his own style by means of a natural synthesis of serial techniques and tonal principles. His music is centred on emotional expression and special sonorities as well as on mature and dramatic musical forms. Philharmonic. It is a typical concertante, colourful and clear in composition. The first
