Marcel Wengler studied at the "Conservatoire Royal de Musique" in Brussels and was assistant for many years to Hans Werner Henze in the "Musikhochschule" in Cologne. He studied conducting under several persons, including Igor Markevitch and Sergiu Celibidache, the latter having had a great influence on him. In 1978, Marcel Wengler won the first prize in the International Conductors’ Competition in Rio de Janeiro. As conductor, he has recorded over one hundred works for a variety radio companies, including many premières. With the symphony orchestra of Radio-Télé-Luxembourg, he has recorded a CD series comprising works by Luxembourgish composers. He has conducted in England, France, Spain, Romania and Germany as well as in Lisbon, Moscow, Leningrad, Kazan and Rio de Janeiro.

As a composer, Marcel Wengler has so far written around eighty works of the most varied types, including symphonies and concertos as well as a stage, chamber and ballet music. His compositions, which are published in New York, London and in Germany, are performed the world over. After a successful première in Luxembourg, the musical play Rex Leo was presented in a new production in the Graz opera house. In 1983, he produced his first film music, Un Amour de Swann, by Volker Schlöndorff, with the strings of the Munich Philharmonic. In the last few years Marcel Wengler has composed successful music for other films and conducted the recordings in Berlin, London, Cologne, Paris, Munich and Hamburg.

The main thrust of his activity as a composer since 1995 has been towards concertos for solo instrument and orchestra. He conducted the first performance of his concerto for violoncello with the Portuguese National Orchestra in Lisbon, as well as his concerto for viola and orchestra with Garth Knox and the Nuremberg Philharmonic. The violin concerto, dating from 1998, was selected by the jury for the World Music Days in Romania and performed there as part of the festival. He composed a concerto for flute and orchestra under commission from the Orquestra Nacional do Porto and conducted the première in 1999.

Marcel Wengler is the President of the Luxembourg Society for Contemporary Music, which was founded in 1983, and was the artistic director of the World Music Days which took place in Luxembourg in 2000. He has directed the Luxembourg Sinfonietta since 1999 and with this ensemble, he has organized the “Luxembourg International Composition Prize” each year.

En tant que chef d’orchestre, il a enregistré pour de nombreuses stations de radio une centaine d’œuvres, dont certaines premières mondiales. Avec l’Orchestre Symphonique de Radio-Télé-Luxembourg il a enregistré une série de CDs avec plus de 20 œuvres symphoniques de compositeurs luxembourgeois. Marcel Wengler a dirigé en Angleterre, France, Espagne, Roumanie et en Allemagne, ainsi qu’à Lisbonne, Moscou, Léningrad, Kazan et Rio de Janeiro.

En tant que compositeur, Marcel Wengler a crée jusqu’à ce jour quelque 80 œuvres des genres les plus divers: symphonies, concertos, œuvres pour théâtre et ballet ainsi que de la musique de chambre. Ses compositions, publiées à New York, à Londres et en Allemagne, sont jouées partout dans le monde. Après avoir connu un grand succès lors de sa création à Luxembourg, le musical Rex Leo a été présenté dans une nouvelle production à l’opéra de Graz. En 1983, Marcel Wengler a composé sa première musique de film pour Un amour de Swann de Volker Schlöndorff, qu’il a enregistrée avec les cordes de l’Orchestre Philharmonique de Munich. Ces dernières années, il a composé avec succès plusieurs musiques de film, dont il a dirigé les enregistrements à Berlin, Londres, Cologne, Paris, Munich et Hambourg.

Depuis 1995, Marcel Wengler concentre son activité créatrice sur la composition d’oeuvres pour instrument solo et orchestre. Il a dirigé à Lisbonne la création mondiale de son Concerto pour violoncelle avec l’Orchestre National Portugais et la soliste Françoise Groben, et récemment, avec les "Nürnberger Philharmoniker", son Concerto pour alto et orchestre avec en soliste Garth Knox. Son Concerto pour violon et orchestre de 1998 fut sélectionné par le jury pour être joué aux "World Music Days" en Roumanie. Le Concerto pour flûte est une commande de l’Orchestre National du Portugal avec lequel Marcel Wengler en a dirigé la création mondiale en 1999 avec en soliste le flûtiste luxembourgeois Carlo Jans.

Marcel Wengler est président de la Société Luxembourgeoise de Musique Contemporaine, fondée en 1983, et a été le directeur artistique des "World Music Days" qui ont eu lieu au Luxembourg en 2000. Depuis 1999 il est le directeur artistique de l’ensemble "Luxembourg Sinfonietta" avec lequel il organise annuellement le "Luxembourg International Composition Prize".
